How to Keep Protein Powder From Clumping

A nourishing protein drink or shake is the best way to refuel after a workout, but clumpy, chalky protein powder in your drink isn't appetizing. Some brands of protein powder get mixed better than others, so try a few different brands until you find one you like. Then, invest in a good blender or protein shaker cup to get the smooth consistency you desire.

  1. Put into a blender or shaker cup the recommended number of scoops of protein powder as instructed by the product label.
  2. Pour in an appropriate amount of your desired liquid -- water, milk or juice. If you're making a smoothie, add ice and fresh fruit to the blender, if desired.
  3. Close the top of the shaker cup or blender and make sure it's secure. Shake the shaker cup vigorously for 30 seconds and then open the lid to check the consistency. If there are still clumps, continue shaking. If you're using a blender, pulse the ingredients several times and then blend continuously for 30 seconds until thoroughly mixed.

Tips

  • You can also add protein powder to hot drinks, soups and oatmeal. Because you're adding the powder to a hot liquid, you won't need to shake or blend it. Stir until dissolved.

Warnings

  • Unless you exercise vigorously and lift weights or are using protein shakes as meal replacements under the supervision of your doctor, you likely don't need to supplement your diet with protein. Excess protein gets stored in the body as fat, which leads to weight gain. Speak to your doctor about whether protein shakes should have a regular place in your diet.
